Recognizing the signs of financial exploitation and taking proactive measures to prevent and address it are crucial in safeguarding the financial well-being and dignity of older adults. The signs may be subtle or obvious when an older adult states they are being exploited. It’s important to report these incidences even when there are only suspicions of exploitation. Perpetrators are persuasive and tricky, so catching them is often difficult.
Remember: It is not the victim’s fault. Be careful to be supportive and not blame a victim or allow the victim to blame themselves.
Remember that reporting, in addition to addressing, the suspected exploitation will not only help yourself (or the person you care for), but other victims as well. Every report improves the collected data on perpetrators and puts investigators in a better position to eliminate future financial abuse of older adults.
